PPL

All pilot training is built on the foundation of a PPL. After obtaining your PPL, you are entitled to hire and fly the kind of aircraft for which you have been licensed, either for the purpose of accumulating hours toward your CPL or for recreational purposes. This means that you can bring along friends or family as long as they are not paying passengers.

Training Involved:

The student pilot must complete 25 hours of dual training (flying with an instructor). Whilst this is a minimum requirement by the SACAA, individual requirements may vary.  Your instructor will ensure you have the necessary skills to operate safely and in a competent manner.

Student Pilots also need to complete 15 hours of solo training (flying on your own) of which at least five hours must consist of cross-country flying.

Theoretical Knowledge Examination to Complete:

All Theoretical Knowledge Examinations must be passed with a minimum score of 75%

  • Air law
  • Meteorology
  • Flight Performance and Planning
  • Navigation
  • Aircraft Technical and General
  • Principles of Flight
  • Human Performance and Limitations

Other Important Requirements:

Aviation Medical Examination:

You must pass a Class II Aviation Medical Examination before receiving a Student Pilot's License. This examination must be performed by a SACAA-approved medical examiner.

Pilot Excess Insurance:

From the first day of your flight training, you must purchase R20,000 in pilot excess insurance. This kind of excess insurance is available for a small monthly price. (Please note that this is not an additional R20,000 fee; rather, it is a monthly premium that covers the excess on any claims.)

Restricted Radio License and English Language Proficiency tests:

Restricted Radio test - Prior to receiving a PPL, a student pilot must first obtain a Restricted Radio License, which is obtained after completing a practical assessment and written exam. A course is delivered to a group of students by a competent trainer to prepare them for practical assessments and tests.

Language Proficiency Test -This test measures English proficiency using ICAO and SACAA guidelines. All Air Traffic Controllers and Flight Crews that work in an airspace where English is required must have a rating of 4, 5, or 6.
